Magellan
Magellan Navigation was founded in 1986 as an independent company. The company changed hands a couple of times, having been bought out by Orbital Sciences Corporation and later by Thales Navigation. After a few shifts in management and a name change (known as Thales Navigation for a period of time), it was purchased by private equity firm Shah Capital Partners in 2006 and renamed Magellan Navigation. It is now owned by Mio Technology, a purchase that occurred in 2008. Magellan is a producer of consumer and professional grade GPS (global positioning system) receivers. The company is currently headquartered in Santa Clara, California, with sales and engineering centers in Nantes, France and Moscow, Russia. The company was the creator of the Magellan NAV 1000, the world's first commercial handheld GPS receiver. The company also introduced the first handheld satellite communicator.
Magellan's line of consumer GPS products includes the Magellan RoadMate, Magellan CrossoverGPS and Magellan Maestro series. The company also has a partnership with Hertz Rent-a-Car, and has developed the Hertz NeverLost car navigation system. Magellan consumer GPS units include a variety of viewing options, such as 3D bird's-eye view, a night view, and pop-up visuals of upcoming turns. Some of Magellan's professional grade offerings include mobile mapping, as well as land and marine surveying units. The company also provides maps and map-related software for use on PCs, such as MapSend Manager for organizing, updating, customizing, and transferring GPS mapping data.
