Nokia is a multinational communications corporation based out of Espoo, Finland. The origins of the corporation began in 1865 when Fredrik Idestam, Nokia's founder, established a groundwood pulp mill and began manufacturing paper. In 1871, Idestam converted his business into share company with the help of Leo Mechelin, thus founding the Nokia Company. Today, Nokia is the world's largest manufacturer of mobile handsets. The company dominates about 39% of the global market share of mobile phones (as of 2009). The company produces mobile devices for GSM, CDMA, W-CDMA (UMTS), and every other major protocol and market segment. Nokia currently has over 123,000 employees in over 120 countries. Of that workforce, over 37,000 (roughly 30%) work in research and development in 16 countries across the globe.
Nokia is currently engaged in the development and manufacturing of mobile devices and networking equipment, including a recent return to the PC market. The company is also engaged in bridging the gap between the internet and communications industries, and providing free digital navigation services through Navteq (a Nokia subsidiary). Nokia offers a host of internet services on their devices via the Ovi platform, these services include applications, games, music, maps, messaging and other media. The company groups their products into different lines according to their purpose, such as the Xseries of Multimedia phones, Nseries of mobile computing handsets (or smartphones), and Eseries of enterprise solution devices.
