VCDs use an encoding standard called MPEG-1 to store the video and audio. \r\nSVCD (Super Video CD) is an MPEG-2 Video CD, with higher image resolution than a VCD. \r\nDivX is based on the MPEG-4 compression format. MPEG-4 is a standard of video compression that is both high quality and low bitrate. Some call MPEG-4 the "MP3 of the video world". Its quality can range from net-streaming quality to as good as DVD. \r\nVHS refers to the the large home video cassettes that are used in standard home VCRs. Because they are bulky and display lower quality video than other, newer formats, they are slowly being replaced by many newer digital medias. S-VHS and Super-VHS provide higher resolution. \r\nDVD is short for digital versatile disc or digital video disc, a type of optical disk technology similar to the CD-ROM. A DVD holds a minimum of 4.7 GB of data, enough for a full-length movie. It is now the favored standard for most digital movie releases and rentals. \r\nDigital8 is mostly used as a camcorder media. It records digital video onto an 8mm cassette that can hold 2.5 hours of video at a resolution of about 500 lines.

Dolby Digital can allow anything from 1 to 6 channels (front right, front left, rear right, rear left, center and subwoofer) of sound be decoded and then passed on to any receiver with 6-channel inputs. \r\nPro-Logic and Pro-Logic II are methods of encoding 4 channels for Pro-Logic (left, right, center, surround) and 5 channels for Pro-Logic II (left, right, center, left surround, right surround), into a stereo (left, right) channel format to be then decoded back into 4 or 5 channels with the proper decoder. Pro-Logic technology is widely used as it can be encoded into any form of stereo audio stream, including digital files such as mpeg-1/2, MP3, audio CD's, and VHS tapes. \r\nDTS Decoding is a little like Dolby Digital, it is a 6-channel digital surround format that provides a separate channel of sound to five speakers (right, center, left, right surround, left surround), and a subwoofer. Input connectors allow information to be transferred to the device from another device. Component Video will provide the best picture for DVDs as they are encoded in component video. Mounting Standard refers to the way the device is installed in the vehicle. \r\nThe DIN system uses a standardized rectangular opening in the dash. DIN installations are usually quick and easy. Removal and installation is done from the front, and in most cases, you don't have to remove any dash pieces. \r\nMost modern cars use the 'ISO standard' connector block system for connecting up the factory-fit radio. This consists of twin eight-pin rectangular plugs (two rows of four pins each), one plug for the power and one for the speaker connections. \r\nCommon among Japanese vehicles is the cross ISO-DIN mount. An advantage of this type of mounting is that you can install a DIN receiver and use the car's factory-installed radio brackets for support. To install a DIN-style receiver in an ISO-DIN style opening, you'll probably need to remove the new receiver's plastic trim ring. The car owner's manual will let you know if this is the case.
