Key Features
Barcode scanners can come in varies types - from the typical Handheld barcode to the more luxuries portable terminals used for retail and stocktaking.
Select the method that the barcode scanner can operate. Wired scanners are generally cheaper and do not require batteries in order to operate. While a wireless option will be more expensive, may require the battery to be constantly recharged but does afford the user more freedom. Wireless is now the preferred standard for stocktaking scanners for warehouse managers.
Optical
Progressive Scan CCD Is the newest type of bar code reader currently available and are camera based readers that use a small video camera to capture an image of a bar code. The reader then uses modern digital image processing techniques to decode the bar code. Much as video cameras do these scanners use the same CCD technology as in a CCD bar code reader except that instead of having a single row of sensors, a video camera has hundreds of rows of sensors arranged in a two dimensional array so that they can generate the image. CCD image sensors (Charge Coupled Device) readers use an array of hundreds of tiny light sensors lined up in a row in the head of the reader. The important difference between a CCD reader and a laser scanner is that the CCD reader is measuring emitted ambient light from the bar code whereas a laser scanner measures reflected light of a specific frequency originating from the scanner itself.
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have several strong attributes as a type of barcode scanners. LEDs are designed to be installed where space is at a premium. They operate at a short distance from the barcode. They have much longer life and are not affected by shock or vibration, as in the case in laser diodes. LEDs are available in several different wavelengths, in both the visible and infrared spectrum, making it possible to tailor the wavelength of the light source to the application.
